Clockwork heart

don't you call my name
won't you come back then

through your eyes
love defies
every chance to be denied
we bend our necks down to behold
a dry branch becoming fruitful bough
still, quiet is no longer of our world
and these branches are just reflections
made of water
confusing the shape of our thoughts
into a fake copper light

through your smile
love rarefies
unrequited and confined
once you’d lift your prayers to reach
the roots of this old tree
once I would paint my cheeks with stripes of war
and dusty tears
lorn in cold atonement and dismay
standing on nobody’s shoulders
time froze us and nailed us to his wall
piercing rough pride
and a swollen consciousness
always marooned in some chasm
of the seas of the past
time narrows and leaves no breath

in the haste of a broken rhyme
we cursed so hard just to be found
so aimless and bored
proud and secured, sad and obscure
we’d bide our time
and culled each other
out of the herd, just as we pleased

we’re but two sparks
two distant and dim lights
long time gone, no longer entwined, no longer mine
we’re but two sparks
feeble but leaving scars
two faulty gears of a clockwork heart


when you’re old and nodding by the fire
remember me
and dream of the soft look your eyes had once

regret with me how love fled
and paced upon the mountains overhead
